Velvet pumpkins: the home decor accessory you need for Halloween

With Halloween around the corner, those looking to add some stylish Halloween-themed decor into their home (which isn't always easy to pull off as it typically lends itself to a gothic and ghoulish aesthetic) will find that velvet pumpkins strike the perfect balance.

For several years now, ornamental pumpkins have been given an on-trend update with plush velvet upholstery; the woven tufted fabric with a sumptuous feel is already a popular feature in contemporary homes, with velvet sofas being a prime example.

Do a quick Google search for velvet pumpkins and you'll be spoilt for choice – there are endless colour options too. In fact, part of its appeal is probably the various shades on offer. Choose rust orange to mark the changing season or opt for more chic pastel velvet shades, including soft pink, lilac and peach, or even rich jewel colours from teal to purple.

Soft and squishy, these velvet pumpkins are often filled with polyester fibrefill – the same material that is used to stuff toys and teddy bears – and then wrapped in velvet fabric and finished with a real or artificial pumpkin stem attached on top. It could also make the perfect craft afternoon, if you're the creative type.

Perfect as an autumn decoration or Halloween prop, it's a good idea to style these velvet pumpkins in groups of three and, depending on the size, you can place it in the hallway or even on your porch as a welcoming way to greet guests. If you buy smaller ones, arrange them on a coffee table or sideboard to create a centrepiece, or even on the mantelpiece. Tiny pumpkins are great for the dining table if you want to nail the tablescaping trend.
